Your team attended the training. Now what???

Hi Reader,

Have you ever sat in a leadership training that was actually good?

The kind where people are engaged, the facilitator is inspiring, the content they've planned for the day makes sense, and for a moment you think, “Yes, this is exactly what we needed.”

And then everyone goes back to work.

The inbox is still full. The meetings are still happening. The same decisions are still waiting to be made, and before long, that really helpful training becomes another thing people attended instead of something that changed how they lead.

It's like going to school and learning Trigonometry.

You may understand it well enough during class, but if you never apply it again, practice it consistently, or revisit it outside the lesson, eventually most of it fades.

Not because you were incapable of learning it, but because exposure alone rarely creates long-term retention or behavioral change.

Leadership development works the same way.

I wrote about it in my recent article, “Drive-By Leadership Training: Why Exposure Isn’t Development.”

A single session can introduce ideas, language, and awareness, but sustainable leadership growth usually requires more... so much more.

Why Good Training Still Needs Structure

Reader, leadership growth is more than just providing your team members with useful information. It's about helping them use it when the meeting gets tense, when expectations need to be clarified, when decisions need to be made, and when old habits feel easier than new ones.

That is where a lot of organizations unintentionally stop too soon.

But, the good news is....This is the kind of work I help leaders and organizations examine.

I offer complimentary consultations for leaders who want to better understand where leadership, workflow, communication, or alignment gaps may be affecting the way work gets done.

More Leadership Conversations Beyond the Inbox

Should you hire more people

Connect with Donna on LinkedIn | Instagram | Facebook | YouTube Reader, There’s a phrase that sounds practical in a meeting, but usually points to a much bigger issue: “We just need more people.” It sounds like a staffing problem, but sometimes it is really a leadership design problem. Adding more people may ease the pressure temporarily, but it will not fix unclear priorities, broken workflows, slow decisions, or work that keeps expanding without anything coming off the table. That is how...

5 Ways Leaders Lose Trust

Connect with Donna on LinkedIn | Instagram | Facebook | YouTube Reader, There are certain things leaders do that make people stop trusting them a little at a time. And believe me, it's rarely one massive mistake. More often, it's the slow accumulation of smaller moments that make people pause, pull back, and start moving differently. A leader says they want honesty, but their reaction makes people regret giving it. They talk about empowerment, but still need to control every detail. They...

Connect with Donna on LinkedIn | Instagram | Facebook | YouTube Hey Reader, I came across a thought recently that has stayed with me because of how often it shows up inside organizations that are full of capable, committed people: If everything is a priority, is anything? It's such a simple question, but it gets to the heart of why so many teams feel overextended even when everyone appears to be doing their part. The real issue is that too many things are being treated as equally urgent at...
