Is thinking too much turning into a HUGE problem?

Hi Reader,

The other day, I created a post about three signs your team may be overthinking everything.

I started thinking about it because overthinking at work rarely announces itself as overthinking.

It can look like a team being thorough.

It can sound like people asking smart questions.

It can even feel responsible to keep discussing an issue before moving forward.

But there comes a point when careful thinking stops improving the decision and starts delaying it.

And when that becomes a pattern across a team, leaders may see missed deadlines, slow execution, or a lack of ownership without immediately recognizing what's actually happening underneath.

In the post, I shared three behaviors I pay attention to when a team seems to be spending more time thinking about the work than moving the work forward.

You may recognize one or two of them on your own team.

Could Your Team Use a Conversation Like This?

One of the reasons I create content around topics like decision-making, accountability, communication, and team effectiveness is because these issues don't always need another lengthy training program to get people thinking differently.

Sometimes, a focused conversation can be a useful place to start.

Through my Lunch & Learn sessions, I work with organizations to bring practical leadership topics directly to their teams in a format designed to encourage discussion, reflection, and application to the work they're already doing.

Sessions can be tailored around challenges your leaders and teams are currently navigating, whether that's overthinking decisions, unclear ownership, communication breakdowns, prioritization, delegation, or another leadership issue that's getting in the way of progress.

If there's a conversation your team needs to have, I'd be glad to help you facilitate it. Click the button below to schedule a complimentary consultation.

Teams can get so accustomed to certain patterns that they stop seeing them altogether. That’s where an outside perspective can make a meaningful difference.

micromanaging team members

Connect with Donna on LinkedIn | Instagram | Facebook | YouTube Hi Reader, I was thinking recently about a manager who spent nearly twenty minutes reviewing an email one of his employees had written. The employee had done a perfectly good job, but before the email could go out, he changed a few sentences, questioned some of the wording, and eventually found himself discussing whether a semicolon should have been a period. If you had asked him whether he was a micromanager, I’m pretty sure he...

Survival Skills Have a Shelf Life

Connect with Donna on LinkedIn | Instagram | Facebook | YouTube Hi Reader, Have you ever felt these.... The times at work when you do whatever needs to be done. You take on the extra responsibility because someone has to. You solve the problem yourself because explaining it would take longer. You say yes to one more thing because pushing back feels like another task you simply don't have the energy for. And for a while, it works. But what about what happens when the habits that helped us...

The cost of the conversation you're avoiding

Connect with Donna on LinkedIn | Instagram | Facebook | YouTube Hey Reader, Have you ever sat in a meeting where everyone clearly knew what the problem was, but somehow the entire conversation managed to happen around it?Like nobody wants to talk about it, so the problem just dragged on.... Maybe someone had been missing deadlines for weeks, and other people were quietly picking up the slack. Maybe there was tension between two team members and it started affecting everyone else. Or maybe a...
